At just 14 years old, Jazz Jennings has already racked up an impressive list of accomplishments. The transgender teen was the subject of a documentary on Oprah’s OWN network at age 11, sat down with Barbara Walters a year later for an in-depth conversation about what it means to be a transgender girl, co-authored a children’s book about trans youth called I Am Jazz, was named one of Time magazine’s 25 most influential teenagers (and to The Advocate‘s 40 under 40 list in 2012), and will be the center of a new TLC reality series focusing on Jennings and her family called All That Jazz.
And now, skin care company Clean & Clear has tapped that the wise-beyond-her-years teenager as the face of its new “See the Real Me” campaign. The company explains the campaign’s impetus as being “about girls having the courage to show who they really are, and what makes them unique.”
“Growing up has been quite a struggle being transgender,” Jennings says in Clean & Clear’s video profile. “Especially in middle school. Some kids greet each other with hugs, and then, just give me a ‘hi.’ And sometimes I’ve even been called an ‘it.’ So I basically just kept to myself.”
“But this year, I decided to make a change and put myself out there and make new friends,” Jennings continues. “For the first time, I invited girls over to the house, and we started hanging out more, and it was just a great time for me — and it still is.”
